Very useful and highly entertaining book. Good explanations, clear examples and well written.

However, it has two problems that should cost a star each:
    - The layout of the pages is quite bad. A reference book like this cannot afford this type of blunder. In all cases it is very difficult to quickly find the actual definition of the words under study. You need to read the whole thing to be able to find it.
    - Some of the pitfalls are a bit ludicrous. Do people really confuse Libertarian with Libertine? Industrial with Industrious? Livid with Lurid? Ad hoc with Ad lib? De facto with de jure? In cases like this the author just shows examples of correct usage--perhaps because it would be very difficult to find examples of incorrect usage.

Customer ReviewsMORE LIKE "A LITTLE LESS"... BUT...STILL A FIVE
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
So, as far as being fourteen goes, I think everyone owes it to themselves to pick up the ORIGINAL Dazed and Confused soundtrack, because it is without a doubt essential listening. If you are a fan of the first, then you will probably want this one, as a companion to the first, and a way to stretch out what comes out the boombox, while you slug a few of the beers you stole from your parents fridge out behind the local town moon tower.

I dont like it as much as the first volume, and always thought that maybe the title should have been... "A little Less Dazed And Confused..." but thats only because it has less songs, and two of them are Peter Frampton songs... back to back?!

I still give it five stars though. Mix it up with volume one, ...perhaps find your own copy of Sweet Emotion and Dylans Hurricane, and you can have yourself a sweet bender, maaan. Plus, this disc still learned me a nice handful of gems just like the first one did... would I have ever rocked out to the following without my Even More Dazed soundtrack?...FREE RIDE, LIVING IN THE USA, BALINESE,RIGHT PLACE WRONG TIME, Foghats MAKE LOVE TO YOU!!!(smokes!), plus the other stuff is good too.., but basically its the leftovers that didnt fit on the first disc, and the label still couldnt clear the rights with Aerosmith or Dylan. That shouldnt matter much though.
I hope that theres a new crop of Freshman chicks rocking out to this stuff this summer man. You- know- I- do, man. ROCK

If you loved the Dazed and Confused soundtrack, youll love this one too. It contains all those songs that they couldnt fit on the first soundtrack. Great CD.
    Better Than the First!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :4
I actually like this one better than the first release. Its a great, eclectic mix of FM radio hits from the golden age of FM radio. (I was 15 in the summer of 1976, so maybe Im a little biased.)

All of these songs were part of the soundtrack of my life, played at suburban basement make-out parties and blasted from the windows of gas-guzzling old American cars. How I wished I could have grown a mustache like the ones sported by Foghat!

    Where Is Bob
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
    This soundtrack is absolutly amazing...
I just have one question abou it...
Where is "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan?
Another excellent soundtrack for a great movie!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :3
"Dazed and Confused" is a film that unfortunately bombed at the box office when it was in theatres. Fortunately, it has since become a cult classic, and one of the definitive "party" flicks. It helped jump start the careers of the films soon-to-be stars, such as: Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Matthew McConaughey, Rory Cochrane, Jason London, and Milla Jovovich, to name a few. I first saw "Dazed" when I was 15. I heard how great of a film it was, so of course I decided to check it out. By the end of my first viewing, I was hooked. I became obsessed with the movie, and have seen it so many times that Ive lost count, and its still fresh and hilarious with every viewing (which is rare for a film)! It has become one of my favorite movies of all time, as well.

Anyway, just like the films first soundtrack (simply titled "Dazed And Confused"), this soundtrack has excellent songs, but to me, the standouts are: "No More Mr. Nice Guy" by Alice Cooper (awesome hard rocker, which is excellently used in the film), "Do You Feel Like We Do?" by Peter Frampton (an awesome rocker that features the infamous "talkbox"), "I Just Want To Make Love To You" by Foghat (a cool rocker that youll want to bang your head to), and "Free Ride" by The Edgar Winter Group (definitely a song to crank while cruising with your friends). As I said in my review for the films other soundtrack, the films opening track, "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith, and Bob Dylans "Hurricane" are nowhere to be found on either of the films soundtracks.

    Customer ReviewsEver-reigning Queen of Sopranos
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :4
Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadnt really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the star soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popps terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - thats what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popps singing. We today would modify it to wonderful and unsurpassable.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.

Wonderful introduction to the art of Lucia Popp
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
Lucia Popp was a fine soprano in her day. Her repertoire was broad--from Grieg to Tchaikovsky to Mozart to Dvorak to Smetana to Orff to Mahler to Handel to Strauss (Richard and Johan, Jr.). This 2 CD set shows her talents off nicely. Some exemplars of her art:

Solveigs Sing, from "Peer Gynt" by Grieg: Hers is an affecting version. Popp had a rich voice that worked very well in this piece. She sings this smoothly.

"Stetit puella" from "Carmina Burana" by Orff: Well sung. She gives life to Orffs work. She displays a rich voice which produces a smooth sound in this cut.

Mahlers 4th Symphony: The vocal part of Mahlers 4th symphony is affecting and effective. Popp sings this well, an enchanting version in fact. She handles the vocal challenges of this work well.

"Voi che sapete" from Mozarts "Le Nozze di Figaro": Her rich voice fits this aria well. Its almost weird that she can sing this so well--and then do the Queen of the Night effectively! This is an evocative piece, and she captures the character pretty well, in my judgment.

"Der Holle Rache" from Mozarts "Magic Flute": And now for something completely different. . . . What a change of pace! She does a superb job in this difficult singing role she is a credible Queen of the Night. Her staccato technique is strong she handles the difficult and treacherous passages well--and nails the high notes cleanly and crisply.

So, what can one say after listening to this 2 CD set? Lucia Popp had considerable talent and fine technique. She was clearly one of the finer soprano talents of the latter part of the 20th century.

This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvoraks Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. Ive yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasnt the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!
    Beautiful compilation (4.5 stars)
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
Lucia Popp came from my home country of Slovakia. In 1963, she took her chance and, as the amazingly talented 24-year-old ingenue, accepted the offer to sing in Vienna. She crossed the iron curtain. This for a long time made her and undesirable element in the Communist Czechoslovakia. Only after the collapse of Soviet block in 1989 she gained the due recognition also in her homeland. Tragically, just four years later she died of cancer, aged only 54...
What she left is the great body of work. She specialized on German and Austrian composers, which is evident also from this great compilation. However, anything she touched, she turned into gold.
On this double CD you can find many of her glorious recordings. Especially high recommended are all Mozarts (among them the famous Queen aria from Magic Flute) and Handels songs, unsurpassable Dvorak and Smetana, the definitive Richard Strauss 4 Last Songs and the beautiful Letter Scene from Tchaikovskys Eugene Onegin. Also here we have her famous Carmina Burana arias from 1960s.
What is missing, though, is some more of Italian opera, represented only by one piano-accompanied Rossini. I would love to hear Lucia singing "Brindisi" from Traviata as she did to Queen Elizabeth II alongside Placido Domingo in 1986, or listen to her playing Tosca or La Boheme by Puccini. Still, a wonderful CD worth almost five complete stars.

Tellingly, director Richard Linklatters Dazed and Confused was released 20 years after American Grafitti and offers a similar story of troubled young personalities lurking beneath an oversaturated pop culture veneer. Like Lucas before him, Linklatter clearly relishes that gloss and wields it like an ironic chainsaw. His soundtrack is a raucous, authentic collection of mid-70s radio fare, be it sharp-edged pop (Sweet, the vastly underrated Rick Derringer), nascent metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) and out-and-out hard cheese (Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas). Dazed and Confused is the real sound of 70s teenage America. --Jerry McCulley

    The 70s...What a Larf!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
Its been famously suggested that if you remember the 1970s, then you werent really there. Or was it the 1960s? I forget.

One thing about those ten years that cant be obscured by cobwebs or short circuited by misfiring synapses is the music which, despite general malignment from blog-happy kids who werent even a single cell in their daddys nut sack at the time, is an endless parade of addictive melodies, guitar riffs, and vocal somersaults from men in tight satin trousers trying to be boys by flirting with teenage hearts, each one grabbier than the last.

Of course the 1970s also gave us a lot of blow-dried twits singing witless mush about their overwhelming love blotting out everything else in life, but Ive always rationalized away their very existence as the perfect background music for the kind of person who whispers "I love you" to a one-night stand. Some things I cant explain away are the Bee Gees cover of The Beatles "A Day in the Life," how Boston blew up enough to warrant a gig at the Pontiac Silverdome, Dan Hartman leaving the Edgar Winter Group for a career in disco, and why The Dictators werent massive. When I snap my fingers, move on.

This soundtrack may alternately be viewed as a treasure trove of teenage-boy, air-guitar bliss, a howling vortex of everything inherently evil about corporate mainstream rock, or, in todays overcompressed, sterile, tarted-up music biz, the aural equivalent of Cro-Magnon knuckledraggers celebrating the discovery of fire. For those who grew up with the music, its nothing more than an average 60 minutes of rock radio from 30 years back in the haze which - truth be told - we used to rail against for everything from excess advertising to excess Led Zeppelin, safe programming, and station managers who had the gall to send their laid-back DJs to MC punk gigs.

Although you could quibble all day about what desert island tracks should have made the cut (BTOs "You Aint Seen Nothin Yet," Golden Earrings "Radar Love," the studio version of REO Speedwagons "Ridin the Storm Out," or anything from Starz or the J. Geils Band would have all fit nicely), its hard to argue with what did, most of them working wonders over the years to quell suburban-kid anxiety.

Foghats thumping "Slow Ride" sounds as if it has ODd on Sominex but slakes the thirst for a loud, simplistic, English boogie band, the heavy-metal blaze of Deep Purples "Highway Star" still burns like gonorrhea, and Sweets "Fox on the Run" may seem slightly out of its league, but stakes its claim as a bug-eyed glam anthem.

Elsewhere, we get a quick taste of ZZ Top before their 80s detour into the ether as leering, synth-drunk hucksters ("Tush"), Rick Derringers turn as a hard-rock David Cassidy ("Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo"), a just-fed-with-clean-newspapers-in-his-cage Ted Nugent ("Stranglehold"), the Kiss Army patch on the albums jean jacket, "Rock and Roll All Nite," and Alice Coopers rebellious "Schools Out," which starts at punk desperation and ends at bubblegum bliss.

For better or worse, much of the Clerasil rock on display here lives on in the brawny roar and smudgy guitar distortion of a thousand nu-metal bands, the retro slouch of a backwards-leaning Kid Rock, and the cocky power stance of Buckcherry.

Adolescence is tough, especially when you dont grow out of it.
An Excellent Soundtrack For An Excellent Film/Decade
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
I was born in 1976, so I didnt really grow up listening to these songs. However, many of them still get heavy airplay on classic rock stations. Not one song on this album is bad. Personal favorites include "Cherry Bomb" and "Tuesdays Gone." Other solid tracks include "Low Rider," "Tush" and "Love Hurts."

If youve seen the film, you already know that it lives and dies by the music thats constantly played in it. Much like "Swingers," "Dazed And Confused" is a very good film, but the soundtrack selection makes it great.

I gave this album four stars because there are some key tunes missing (most notably "Hurricane," by Bob Dylan). Also, the classic rock vibe is broken up by "Jim Dandy," which doesnt quit fit in as well as the rest of the tunes. Its still a good song, though. This is an excellent album, and if you enjoy classic rock or grew up listening to these tunes, Im sure youll enjoy it (and the film). Highly recommended.

After changing the world with the generation-defining Slacker, director Richard Linklater turned his free-range vérité sensibility on the 1970s. As before, his all-seeing camera meanders across a landscape studded with goofy pop culture references and poignant glimpses of human nature. Only this time around, he's spreading a thick layer of nostalgia over the lens (and across the soundtrack). It's as if Fast Times at Ridgemont High was directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The story deals with a group of friends on the last day of high school, 1976. Good-natured football star Randall "Pink" Floyd navigates effortlessly between the warring worlds of jocks, stoners, wannabes, and rockers with girlfriend and new-freshman buddy in tow. Surprisingly, it's not a coming-of-age movie, but a film that dares ask the eternal, overwhelming, adolescent question, "What happens next?" It's a little too honest to be a light comedy (representative quote: "If I ever say these were the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself."). But it's also way too much fun (remember souped-up Corvettes and bicentennial madness?) to be just another existential-essay-on-celluloid. --Grant Balfour
