These puzzles are highly original, and quite different from what you find in most puzzle books. I was impressed with the large variety of challenges presented. Why do word puzzles all day when you can cross train your brain with spatial, math, visual, and logical problems? This book has them all. The illustrations that accompany each puzzle are also very nice. Get your thinking caps on, though-these highly enjoyable puzzles are "Not-So-Simple"!

Im a casual opera fan and I admit that until a few days ago I didnt even know who Mirella Freni was. Then a friend, whose taste I respect mentioned that an Italian lady named Freni was the second greatest Violetta hed ever heard. He went into raptures and I decided that I had to hear this woman. This morning I bought the CD, put it in my player and was astounded and delighted to hear one of the sweetest voices I have ever heard in my life. Mirella Frenis singing is simply beautiful.

Mirella Frenis singing even today when shes over sixty still teaches all the young sopranos a lesson how a voice can be preserved. Her singing is lovely, creamy and colourful. Shes by far my favourite Liu and part of the Mimi-Triumvirate: Victoria de los Angeles, Maria Callas and Mirella Freni. Her first Mimi with Nicolai Gedda was a revelation, the complete set is a must for ever Puccini-Lover. And despite its not being idiomatic and her poor French her Juliette is riveting and lovely. But my favourite Freni-role will always be Elisabetta in Verdis "Don Carlo" which she sang to perfection on a live-recording from La Scala (Abbado) featuring Carreras, Ghiaurov, Obraszowa etc. etc. An amazing set for those who want to know why Mirella is still adored today!

I first heard Mirella Freni singing at a movie theater in downtown Peoria, Illinois in the mid-1960s it was a theatrical version of "La Boheme," with Nicolai Gedda singing the tenor role on screen. I was enchanted! Ms. Freni was born in 1935 and made her debut in her home town in 1955 (according to the notes accompanying the two CD set). Her singing cuts across a number of styles--from Mozart to Gounod to Puccini and Verdi, with a stopover with Bellini and Donizetti. She chose her roles carefully, to preserve her voice. Results are most satisfying!

Some cuts well depict her singing.

"Si mi chiamano Mimi": This hallmark aria from "La Boheme" captures her vocal skills well. She exhibits a lovely voice and suits Mimi beautifully. She catches the pathos--and hope--of the character. This rendition is smoothly sung, with no problems as she moves from one register to another.

"Addio. . .Dionde lieta usci": This affecting work from Scene III of "La Boheme" is ravishingly and poignantly sung. Her voice is lush and free of affectation.

"Un bel di": From "Madame Butterfly," she essays this famous aria. Well rendered. Her voice suits Puccini nicely. Again, smooth progression from one register to another.

"O rendetemi la speme. . .Qui la voce. . .Vien diletto": I had never thought of Freni as singing the bel canto repertoire, but she does a nice take of this redoubtable coloratura piece. The early aria is well sung. Just so, "Qui la voce." Her effort at "Vien diletto," the wonderful cabaletta, is wonderfully musical. There is some ornamentation, but no trills or other tools of the standard coloratura repertoire. If ytou want the "real deal" coloratura version, listen to Joan Sutherland or Sumi Jo. Nonetheless, a touching version.

"E strano. . .Ah! fors e lui. . .Sempre libera": A well sung version from Verdis "La Traviata." There are many approaches to this piece--from Sutherlands heavily coloratura version to Scottos and Moffos more musical, more character-rich versions. Freni tends more to the latter than the former and compares well with both.

In fine, a nice 2 CD set that well shows off Mirella Frenis work. Anyone interested in this fine sopranos corpus would be well advised to take a listen!

A Superstar To Remember

I fell in love with opera because of Mirella Freni. I heard her sing Mimi to Pavarottis Rodolfo in La Boheme about 30 years ago. Hearing this CD was like seeing a long-lost love, and appreciating them even more this time around.

Freni was a Puccini specialist, and you get an embarrasment of Puccini riches on this CD. Of course, you get the arias "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" and "Addio...DOnde lieta usci" from La Boheme. Those also feature the incredible Niccolai Gedda. I sure would have liked it if they threw in "O soave fanciulla" as well. You also get arias from Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Rondine, Gianni Schicci, Suor Angelica, and Turandot.

But wait, theres more! I had not heard Freni sing Micaela until this CD. Wait until you hear the "Je dis que rien ne mepouvant". It will set you free. Then she throws in "Comme autrefois" from Pearl Fishers. Donizetti, Cilea, Mascagni, Massenet, Bellini, Gounod, Mozart, even Verdi(!)...all here.

There was one thing I found unusual about this compilation, and that was the noticeable absence of "Dove sono" and/or "Porgi amor". I mean, those roles are clearly in the reach of any lyric soprano. I did a little research, and found that she really didnt sing the Countess role in Figaro, she sang Susanna! OK, so lets just say her voice was on the light end of the lyric fach. If thats the case, it makes selections from Tosca, Butterfly, Traviata, Turandot, and Forza kind of curious, doesnt it?

In the end, it doesnt matter. This is an awesome compilation from one of the greatest sopranos of all time. No one is like Freni, and no opera lover should be without this performance record.

Freni is a soprano I didnt much care for in the past. For some reason I took her for granted and didnt listen to her records a lot. However, in search for an lyric soprano with ample coloratura to tackle bel canto roles as well, Freni was one of the few I could think of who had the qualities I was looking for unmistakeable Italian phrasing and musicality, a firm middle register with an easy top and a sweet timbre.

This new release is a great introduction to her big recording legacy. She didnt possess the largest instrument but her technique and wise choices allowed her to expand her repertoire in many areas. The lyrical roles such as Zerlina, Mimi, Liu suit her the best but notice how a more florid part like Norina in Don Pasquale or even the more demanding Puritani Elvira benefits from her firm lyric sound. She avoids the highest notes and if needed sings them carefully but everything is so charmingly sung that a single note cannot ruin the whole. Sincere classical singing does not lie in a single note. Even without the large voice these roles need, she handles the heavy Verdi parts impressively. "O patria mia" and especially Desdemonas scene are magnificient.

This collection has increased my admiration for this wonderful artist. If all the sopranos were flowers in a garden, Freni would be a lovely daisy.

Renata Scotto was an esteemed soprano of the 1950s and 1960s and into the 1970s. She was known well for her characterization. She combined a rich, skilled voice with the ability to create characters on stage. This 2 CD set illustrates her art quite nicely.

Some illustrative cuts:

"Si, mi chiamano Mimi": This wonderful aria from "La Boheme" is natural for Scotto. Her smooth, rich voice captures the young Mimi nicely. There is a poignant characterization evident as well. She is a great stylist here, without some of the annoying affectations that occasionally mar singers performances. Nice transition from register to register.

"O soave fanciulla": This represents one of the great duets in opera. She and her partner, Alfredo Kraus, blend their voices most attractively. Kraus begins wonderfully when Scotto joins him, it is "goose bump city." A wonderful version of this duet.

"Qui la voce. . .Vien diletto": Scottos lush voice is attractive here. She is not a coloratura soprano per se, but her characterization is striking. There is a hint of vocal strain here and there there is also a bit of shrillness on occasion. But no big deal. The cabaletta is musical, but without much ornamentation.

"E strano. . .Sempre libera": One of Scottos signature roles was Violetta in "La Traviata." This was sung later in her career, and it shows. Her characterization is fine, but the voice is not what it once was. There is some harshness here and there the shift from middle to higher register is not as smooth as earlier in her career. Nonetheless, a compelling start and an animated "Sempre libera."

"Spargi damaro pianto": One thinks of Joan Sutherland or Beverly Sills here, not Renata Scotto. This was recorded in 1959, in her prime. This cabaletta is richly sung, without much ornamentation. While it is rather vanilla, there are nice staccato notes and a fine concluding high note.

"Un bel di vedremo": Ravishing. Thats the word Id use to describe her singing on this well known aria.

All in all, a very nice introduction to Renata Scottos musical corpus. Well worth listening to.

The "Singers Singer"

I am thrilled to write the first review of this CD. It is wonderful, and a must-have for fans of lyric sopranos and opera lovers in general.

This CD is a real treat, because it has recordings of Ms. Scotto at various stages of her career: the mid-late 50s, 60s, 70s, and early 1980s. It is instructive and interesting to hear the trajectory of her voice over the years, and priceless to hear some of the roles and arias she truly made her own.

Lets start with the earlier recordings, made between 1958 and 1966. Here is the Renata Scotto that took the world by storm after stepping in for an "indisposed" Maria Callas in 1953. These are truly awesome. One of my favorites is her "Una voce poco fa". She sings it like she was born to sing it. I can also imagine a very cute 24 year old Renata Scotto charming everyone as Rosina. But the highlight of this group is definitely the "Madama Butterfly" from the famous 1966 recording she made with Barbirolli. There are six full arias/duets, starting with "A! Quanto cielo!" and ending with "Tu? tu? piccolo iddio!" The "Un bel di" is sublime, and the "Vogliatemi bene" duet with Carlo Bergonzi was transporting.

She then includes two arias from "Nabucco". This is probably one of those problematic career roles many people fault her for. Abigail is a very strenuous role. The character is mad...through the whole opera. Shes constantly agitated and yelling. That means it is a scream fest for soprano. I just wince when I hear these arias. She does them OK, but really has to push.

The later selections show a mature Scotto. These recordings were made in 1980 and 1981. There are some amazing things here. I was least impressed by her three selections from "La Boheme". Her money notes in "Si. Mi chiamano Mimi" are unsteady and her vibrato kind of wide. But, you think, hey it happens over time, right? Then, you hear a recording of six selections from "La Traviata" from two years later. Incredible. The very difficult first big scene, starting with "E strano" and ending with "Sempre libera" was perfect. Her "Teneste la promessa" will break your heart. It was without a doubt, one of the best Violettas Ive ever heard.

And, before we end, her "Vissi darte" was the best Ive ever heard. It is an amazing performance by a woman, who at age 47, really understood what the aria is about. Ive heard it so many times, and by so many great singers. With Renata, I felt I was hearing it for the first time.

Victoria De Los Angeles died Saturday of heart failure at the age of 83 in Barcelona, Spain. The world of opera mourns her loss. She was a gifted soprano and a wonderful human being. On stage, she was able to directly speak to her audience and communicate with them in a very special and rare way that is not always seen today. She never hid herself behind a facade nor distanced herself from fans and audiences. She was born to sing opera. It was in her blood. This album showcases De Los Angeles in her most memorable and successful roles. Victoria De Los Angeles was one of the first singers from Spain to win worldwide acclaim. Others would follow- Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. De Los Angeles is showcased in this album which may also serve as a tribute to the now late soprano.

Her voice was essentially full lyric with some spinto. Hearing her renditions of "O Mio Babbini Caro"- a signature soprano role, as well as "Ebben Ne Andro Lontana" from La Wally and her performances as Mimi, one is clearly treated to the truest form of a pure lyric soprano. Her voice is spunned gold, with sweet, warm, feminine textures. Her reperotire remained in the Italian and French. Of course, being Spanish, she was a leading singer in Spanish Lieder and romantic ballads. Her Art Songs in Spanish are full of elegance and grace. A champion of obscure composers, she sang and recorded recitals that featured the works of lesser known composers, though strictly Lieder and Folk/Art Song.

Victoria De Los Angeles is fortunately a well-documented artist. Some film footage exist of her performances. I seem to recall that there exists a taped performance of her Violetta in Verdis La Traviata. She excelled in the lyric roles of Mimi in Puccinis La Boheme, Marguerite in Gounods Faust. Her Madame Butterfly is a pure lyric rendition, with less of the dramatic intensity other singers have given the role- i.e. Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, etc. But her Butterfly is actually the way the role ought to be sung. Its a voice of grace, naivete and above all romance that must colorize Butterfly. The dramatic intensity only makes her sound older and madly passionate. She is only a fifteen year old girl who has been deceived and betrayed. She must remain youthful sounding. De Los Angeles does justice to the truest form of Butterfly. She was thrilling in French and Italian operas and her Spanish songs were briliant and beautiful.

Victoria will always be remembered. She was a unique and talented artist of the lyric repertoire. Her pure, lovely voice was like an angels. There will never be another Victoria De Los Angeles. With her death, the end of an era also passes. In particular, I will always remember one reported incident. She was about to make her first recital in America but she had no accompanist- pianist/guitarist etc. When asked how she would handle this, she remarked: "Well I brought my guitar with me". And she proceeded to accompany herself with the guitar.

De los Angeles ability to sing with elegance and style has rarely been equalled and never been surpassed. Shes the greatest Charlotte in "Werther", the most tender Santuzza in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the most sumptuos Nedda in "I Pagliacci". Her Lieder-Recordings are legendary, my favourites are the Spanish ones of course. What a piano-culture and what a velvet sound! Get this set, its cheap and it has GREAT singing!

The very best performance by Victoria de los Angeles

Is the recording on Allegro records of her performance of Madame Butterfly in New Orleans in 1954, not the Rome recording. She is simply radiant, perfect, a voice truly that is a victory for the angels. Unbelievably marvelous.

Very nice introduction to the work of a great soprano

This 2 CD set is a terrific introduction to the body of work of Victoria de los Angeles. As the "liner notes" point out: "She was an artist who brought individuality and a sense of joy to everything she performed. . . ." And this is not hyperbole. She was a top soprano in the middle part of the twentieth century.

Some cuts exemplify her art:

"Un bel di" is a ravishing version of this well known aria. She demonstrates a rich voice with fine musicality. This is a ravishing version of this aria. The singer displays good vocal control. There are nice transitions across the registers.

"Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is another well known work for sopranos. Again, nicely done. She appears (to me anyhow) to catch the spirit of Mimi very nicely indeed.

From "La Traviata," she essays "E strano. . .Sempre Libera." This is an affecting version. She does not have the coloratura armamentarium that some have brought to bear on this aria, but she does a fine job nonetheless. She seems to capture the desperate spirit of Violetta in "Sempre Libera."

Rossinis "Una voce poco fa" is a nice tour de force for sopranos. De los Angeles does a nice job here. This is a work from the Bel canto repertoire, but she does well. She shows vocal agility and captures the spirit of the work. This is an affecting, charming version. There is some occasional vocal harshness, but not a serious issue.

From "Carmen," "Lamour est un oiseau rebelle." Richly and nicely sung.

Her range on this CD is worth noting: from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner to Rossini to Gounod.

And then another of her specialties--songs. She does a nice turn with the Spanish song "Malaguena." Then, in a nice twist, she accompanies herself on guitar in "Adios Granada." Im not normally so excited about songs, but in this case I found her work enchanting.

So, if you want to get a sense of the artistry of Victoria de los Angeles, this is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!

Leaving the hype aside, EMI would have been more accurate to entitle this 2-CD ssurvey "Opera Arias by the Young Caballe." In the whole generous 151 min. there are only 6 songs to represent her extensive recital repertoire, and no Zarzuela. For those items you have to go to rCA. Here we get Caballe mostly from the Seventies (1971-79) with bits form the early Eighties.

The reviewers below have given deserved praise to Caballes abilities as diva. My onw opinion is that she was better on records than in the opera house. She wasnt gifted as an actress and cut a short, wide figure onstage. But as a vocal actress on disc she was very convincing, despite her over-reliance on pathos and delicacy. One longs at times, amid all the beauitful floated notes, for more spine and guts to her heroines. (I find her acclaimed Aida, for example, a one-note portrayal.) Lady Macbeth needs to be more sinister, Elisabetta more tragically enduring.

In all, this two-fer serves as a fine survey of her early career, and for listeners like me, who dont necessarily buy Caballes complete opera sets, it may be all we need.

This two-disc recital draws heavily upon two Caballe recital discs (a Bellini/Verdi recital, and a recital of Puccini arias), with some extra material thrown in. At the end of disc one, there are also some Spanish songs thrown in, a good choice, since Caballe sang these songs extensively in her many recitals.

For Caballe fans that already own the backlist of her recitals, there is not enough here to entice you to buy this new recital, unless you like the unique combination of arias. Tracks 1-5 on disc one are wonderful interpretations by Caballe of Verdian arias. I especially like the one from Macbeth- perfectly executed, with the pianissimi in all the right places. Equally as thrilling is her Tu Che Le Vanita, a dramatic, long aria that shows off the interpretive power she was capable of, when she wasnt in a lazy mood. As for the Ave Maria, I find it curious that they chose to cut the preceding Willow Song. In my mind, you can have a Willow Song on a sopranos recital disc without the Ave Maria, but it seems inappropriate for the reverse to be the case. Personally, I dont think that Caballe has anything on Mirella Freni, who is perhaps the most perfect Desdemona of her era.

I must admit to not having heard Caballes interpretations of LAltra Notte and Voi Lo Sapete. To imagine Caballe singing Santuzza really seems like a stretch to me. My favorite Santuzzas are Callas, Bumbry, and Verrett (in that order). Of course, Caballe did sing a lot of roles, and it isnt impossible that she could do justice to the aria, but I just cant imagine it, try as I might. A final selection worth mentioning is the aria from William Tell, from a supreme bel canto recording of Rossinis masterpiece.

Tracks 1-11 on the second disc are culled from her famous Puccini Arias recording, with the exception of In Questa Reggia from Turandot (a role that she would sing very late in her career, as opposed to the more familiar and suitable-for-her-voice role of Liu). What is notable is what didnt make the cut. Listeners will be deprived of her heart-wrenching, powerful interpretation of Sola, Perduta, Abbandonata, with its sinister clarinet obligato. They will also miss out on an enchanting aria from Puccinis little known and rarely staged Le Villi. This is a shame, since the original Puccini Aria disc is currently out of circulation.

The rest of disc two focuses on Bellini, in the form of I Puritani and Il Pirata. Listeners will be treated to both the polacca and the mad scene from Bellini final opera. Caballe, of course, cannot hold a candle to Joan Sutherland, who was a true coloratura soprano (Caballe was more lyrical), but she isnt bad, either, as Elvira. The Bellini role that would garner her more acclaim was Imogene from Il Pirata. This two-disc recital draws to a close with her divine reading of Imogenes mad scene. This is the stuff of operatic legend.

All in all, minor quibbles aside, this is a great introduction to those not familiar with Caballes grand art.

This is a great collection of caballes eternal art.All the songs here have been remastered and sound wonderful.The very best of,contains a nice selection of caballes greatest verdi singing.Her rendition,heard here,of una macchia e qui tuttora(macbeth)is the best one in recorded history.She sings it with such beauty,feeling,and power,not to mention the most ethereal pianissimo high Dflat to ever caress the ear.All of the arias on this disc amply demonstrates her mastery of bel canto, and italian opera for that matter.In signore,ascolta from turandot,another memorable performance from Caballe,she sculpts this aria beautifully like a master craftsmanending this piece with a ultra high pianissimo bflat,which she holds out all the way to the final bars of the music,for an astounishing 15 seconds.One of the most beautiful notes to ever float from the human throat.Other noticable mentions would be her pace pace mio dio,her ave maria from othello,col sorriso dinnocenza from il pirata,as well as an entire spanish recital(recorded in 1979,in good voice)are all include hereand much more besides.There is also a nice picture of a young, beautiful, and thin Montserrat Caballe on the cover.The cd booklet includes exstensive linear notes and five rare photes of this divine soprano,who has both a heart and voice of pure gold.

The sound on this recording is wonderful. One has no problem of appreciating the unique Lucia Popp. The price is very enticing too. The only problem is that the amount of music on all 4 CDs is about 170 minutes, istead of usual 300 minutes these days. This is nearly half the normal length.
